This ring is made from natural cow bone and can be used as an alternative to the standard coconut shell ring.

Each one begins with a section of bone that is carefully cut, then slowly shaped and polished by hand until smooth. It’s a small detail, but one that subtly changes the look and feel of the gourd bottle.

Compared to coconut shell, bone is stronger and develops a soft natural sheen with time and use. It brings a slightly different texture to the piece—more solid, a bit brighter, and quietly distinctive.

I’ve always been drawn to the character of bone as a material. Simple, durable, and naturally beautiful, it fits well with the materials and philosophy behind Ember Oldways.

Before First Use

  1. It’s normal to see small particles during the first rinse — simply rinse them away.
  2. Before first use, fill the gourd with strong tea or high-proof alcohol (such as vodka) and let it sit for 24 hours. Repeat if necessary to reduce the natural lacquer scent. The scent will gradually fade with use.
  3. Afterward, rinse thoroughly and allow the gourd to air dry in a well-ventilated place.

Safety Notes

  1. To help your gourd last, always twist the stopper gently when inserting or removing it — avoid pulling it straight out.
  2. For daily use, we recommend liquids below 140°F (60°C). If using boiling water, leave the stopper off and let it cool before sealing.

Cleaning & Care

  1. For daily cleaning, simply rinse with water and let your gourd air dry.
  2. For a deeper clean, once dry, add a small amount of coarse salt or rice and shake gently.
  3. For occasional sanitizing, a little high-proof alcohol works well.
  4. Occasionally apply a little food-grade oil to the exterior to help maintain its natural finish.
  5. When not in use, store your gourd in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place with the stopper removed.
